The 25 Best Platforms to Host your Podcast 2024

In the first part of this guide, I explained the steps you must follow to create the content of your podcast. Now, once created, how can you spread them?

  • How can you host a podcast?
  • How to choose a podcast hosting platform
  • Which platform is best for podcasts?

The first thing you have to do (before publishing the content) is host your podcast. Now, what is hosting the podcast? How can I do it? Can I host my podcast for free? It is common for questions like this to arise. However, at Pro Career Shop we have not put in the work to explain everything you need to know to host the contents of your podcast. Take note:

Correctly choosing the platform on which you are going to host your podcast is a very relevant decision that should not be taken lightly, as it has implications for both the short and long term.

1. What does it mean to host a podcast?

Hosting is an online service that allows you to publish a web page, an application, or, as is the case, a podcast. In other words, imagine you want to build a house. First, you would need to buy a piece of land where you could build it, right? Well, the same thing happens with the Internet: you want to create a podcast (the equivalent of building a house), but first, you need to buy land on the Internet where you can host it. And that land is what we know as accommodation or hosting.

However, hosting your podcast is not the only function of hosting or hosting services. Its main functions are:

  • Store your podcast.
  • Provide you with an RSS feed (address of your podcast’s location on the hosting platform).
  • Give you information about downloads of your audio files.
  • Facilitate the process of placing your podcast in the most important directories (such as Spotify or Apple Podcast).

1.1 RSS Feed: A fundamental aspect

On the other hand, once the podcast has been created, and already has an audio file in MP3 format (of a suitable size), it is necessary to upload it to a web server. And, from said server, through an ‘RSS feed,’ your podcast is automatically distributed to the directories where you are registered. In addition, this RSS feed is essential to be able to include your podcasts on the most popular platforms, such as Apple Podcast, Google Podcast or Spotify, among others.

1.2 Cost of hosting a podcast

As for costs, everything will depend on the platform you choose. In some you can host your podcast for free (although we do not recommend this option in any case), while in others the monthly cost is around €50. However, the average is about €30/month.

1.3 Most common options for hosting a podcast

  1. A paid service
  2. A free service
  3. Your website host

1.4 Requirements to choose the best hosting company

We have already explained how, yes or yes, you need to choose a hosting company for your podcast. And, as we have also mentioned, there are numerous alternatives (some free and others paid). Now, how can I choose the best hosting service? From Mundo Podcast, we recommend that you evaluate the following aspects before opting for one alternative or another:

  1. Look for a hosting company that downloads audio quickly, and is reliable with zero or no downtime.
  2. Each hosting company offers you a certain storage space. Therefore, choose an alternative where you can publish a large number of shows, or, in the best case, unlimited podcasts. Now, can I choose cheap hosting and upgrade to a higher-quality one if my podcast thrives? A priori yes you can do it. However, this option is not highly recommended, since it can cause several complications when you want to modify the podcast hosting.
  3. Free hosting servers often do not give the option to listen to all of your podcast programs. For example, imagine that your podcast is successful. Many listeners will want to start listening to it, not for the program you go for (which could be number 50 or 100), but for the first one. However, if your podcast is hosted on a free server, those listeners may not be able to do so, since your shows are not stored indefinitely.
  4. If your goal is to create a successful podcast and be able to have advertisers in the future, it is important that you choose a hosting server whose metrics follow the IAB guidelines (later you will be able to find out which platforms offer these types of metrics). These metrics are becoming the standard of the podcasting industry.
  5. Look for good technical support.  It is also important that the company where you host your podcast offers you fast technical support service. Although it may not seem important to you now, we already told you that it is not at all pleasant to have to wait days to resolve even the smallest technical detail.
  6. Don’t commit to any supplier . Although it is not recommended, you may want to change providers in the future (especially when you use a free one). Therefore, look for a company that allows you to easily transfer your content to the new hosting and that offers you a temporary alternative to the ‘feed’, so that visits that arrive during the transition can be redirected to the new provider. With quality suppliers, we already tell you that this will not be a problem, far from it. However, if you are thinking about hiring free hosting, first confirm that you will have these two facilities if you decide to change servers in the future.
  7. Companies that facilitate the distribution of your podcast to the most successful platforms, such as Spotify, Apple Podcast, YouTube or Google Podcast (among others). That is, depending on the host you choose, you will have more or less facilities for listeners on the main platforms to listen to your podcast. Some companies, in fact, have agreements with Headliner , the leading service to convert audio into a short video, so that you can use it for social promotion.
  8. A modern and attractive podcast player , which also allows you to decide whether or not to display the host’s branding. With free podcasts you usually don’t have the chance to decide.
  9. A simple and intuitive administrative panel , so that you can publish content with little effort. And, furthermore, it has an adequate statistics panel that allows you to know, for example, the number of minutes that listeners dedicate to each program.
  10. If you are just starting out , you may not want to invest a large amount of money. However, we do not recommend hosting your content on a free or cheap platform and then transferring your hosting to a higher quality company if your podcast is successful. On the contrary, our recommendation is the following: look for a quality company that offers different plans, and choose a cheap one. If you need to improve your plan later, you can do so without having to change your travel company.
  11. On the other hand, if you plan to have several podcasts, it is important that you choose a platform that allows you to host several different programs . Some companies force you to hire different hosting for each podcast, which is less advisable.
  12. Finally, if you have a website, you can host your podcast on it . The main advantage of this alternative is that you are the one who maintains control. We will explain how to do it later.

1.5 In short, what does it depend on whether accommodation costs more or less money?

  1. The sound quality and download speed that your podcast will have.
  2. The space your podcast will occupy on their server. The more programs you want to host, the more space you will need and, therefore, the higher the cost.
  3. The average downloads per chapter you expect to achieve.
  4. The extra services and functions you choose.

2. Best platforms to host a podcast

Best Platform Podcast

As we have already noted, some platforms follow the IAB metrics, which are the standard of the podcasting industry, while others do not . From Mundo Podcast, we recommend that you host the content on a platform that does. However, the decision is yours.

2.1 The 10 best platforms that do have IAB certified metrics

2.1 The 7 best platforms that do not have IAB-certified metrics

In the same way that we can measure distance in kilometers or miles, we can measure the engagement (loyalty or commitment to a podcast) of a podcast with IAB metrics or with others. However, this does not mean that some metrics are better than others, and, of course, it does not imply that the quality of a hosting service is better or worse. Therefore, the only disadvantage of the platforms that we will see below is that you cannot effectively compare the engagement of podcasts that use certified metrics to those that use non-certified metrics.

1. Buzzsprout

Websitehttps://www.buzzsprout.com/

Description: Of the platforms that do not have IAB-certified metrics, this is one of the most used. In addition, its popularity continues to increase, among other things, because of how simple and intuitive it is to publish content. They have packages organized based on the number of hours of new content you publish monthly. In addition, they have very advanced measurement tools.

  • Very easy to use.
  • Their customer service is unbeatable.
  • They offer a plugin for WordPress.
  • Podcast episodes can be shared immediately on social media.
  • You will be able to know the performance and trends of your podcast over time.

  • You can have multiple podcasts in a single account.

  • They offer a very simple, but modern administrative panel.
  • They offer very detailed metrics.
  • Creation of RSS for other spaces.

  • Through Auphonic, the quality of audio and transcription of content is improved .

  • You can schedule the publication of your episodes.
  • Their paid plans offer high-quality technical support, via Slack or a direct number.
  • They offer a modern player (without you having to include their branding).

3. Free platforms to host your podcast

Another alternative is to host your podcast on a free platform. Of course, if your goal is to create a professional project, don’t even think about opting for this alternative . Because? Basically, because there are certain risks and imitations that are not worth accepting, since they can cause different problems in both the short and long term. Let’s see what these limitations are:

3.1 Limitations of free platforms

  • Generally storage and bandwidth are limited (about 100 MB and even less).
  • The number of hours you can post monthly is also limited.
  • The audio quality is lower, since this way it takes up less space on their servers.
  • Ads may be included on your podcast page or at the beginning/end of your audio.
  • Customer service (technical support) is usually non-existent or very limited.
  • Many companies do not offer statistics. However, this can be solved by adding an external service.

3.2 What should you take into account before selecting free hosting?

As we have already pointed out, it is not a good idea to access these types of services. However, if you are clear that you want to host your podcast on a free platform, there are several aspects that you should take into account:

  • The number of shows and minutes you plan to publish monthly.
  • The importance you give to audio quality.
  • The number of listeners you expect to receive.
  • If you need the programs you publish not to disappear after several days/weeks.
  • To what extent do you care if the hosting company includes ads on your podcasts?

3.3 The 8 “best” free podcast hosting platforms

As you have already seen, there are numerous hosting platforms for podcasts. However, there are not so many companies that offer such hosting for free. However, here are those that we have been able to find that do:

1. Spreaker

2. Pinecast

Website : https://www.pinecast.com/

  • Its most important disadvantage is that the channel is not yours, but Anchor’s.

4. Whooshkaa

Website : https://www.whooshkaa.com/

  • They offer metrics to know when, where and how listeners listen to you.

5. iVoox

Website : https://www.ivoox.com/

Description : This platform (one of the most popular in Spanish) is one of the best free alternatives. They offer a Freemium service. In this case, we will look at its advantages and disadvantages separately.

Most important advantages:

  • You can publish all the audios and podcasts you want unlimitedly.
  • The download speed is quite high.
  • They offer tools so you can spread your program on Social Networks.
  • Its statistics tool is quite attractive.

Most important limitations (logically, when you move to the paid service these disadvantages disappear):

  • There may be a delay in the publication of your episodes.
  • Ads are included, both in your podcast and on the page they give you.
  • RSS limits the chapters it sends to  iTunes to 20 .
  • The maximum duration of your audios is two hours (each episode).

Of all the free platforms, this is the most recommended. In addition, you can always upgrade your plan (and upgrade to premium) if you need to, and with the advantage of not having to change providers.

6. Archive.org

Website : https://archive.org/

Description : This company was founded in 1996 as an Internet library, and its objective is to offer permanent (and free) access to researchers, historians and academics. Archive.org is another of the most popular hosting services for podcasters, among other things, because it has no hosting space limit. Come on, you can publish all the content you want. And Archive is a nonprofit library that offers millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. and more. What many podcasters usually do is try this platform when they start from scratch, and move their podcast to a paid server when they start to have more listeners.

Most important advantages/limitations:

  • It is a secure platform to host the MP3s of your podcast.
  • It offers unlimited storage space and bandwidth.
  • Show all your podcasts, which is not usually the case with free platforms.
  • However, at the metrics level it is very limited (although you can always download additional plugins or tools) .
  • Furthermore, the issue of replacing an audio file once it has been uploaded to Archive is quite complicated.
  • It is quite slow, which is not usually liked by people.
  • Moving to another accommodation is quite simple.

7. Podomatic

Website : https://www.podomatic.com/

Description : A very popular company among podcasters, which offers a very limited free plan so that you can later switch to their paid plan.

Most important advantages/limitations:

  • 2,000 shipping requests and 15 GB of monthly data transfer for the first year.

8.Red Circle

Website : https://redcircle.com/host-distribution

Description : At Red Circle you can host and distribute your content from a single account. Their hosting service is free, although they hope to get you to hire additional services.

  • Very easy to handle.
  • You can place individual chapters or catalogs.
  • Offers specialized metrics.
  • Ability to set a price to listen to your program.
  • You can receive your payments through Google Pay and Apple Pay.

4. What is the best platform to host a podcast?

As you can see, there are many alternatives to choose from. Let’s review:

  1. Payment platforms that DO have IAB certified metrics
  2. Payment platforms that DO NOT have IAB certified metrics
  3. And the free platforms?

To choose between these 3 options, we recommend answering the following questions:

  • First of all: do you want to host your podcast on a paid or free platform? As we have already highlighted, we do not recommend hosting it on free platforms. However, if you are clear that you are going to opt for this alternative, we must highlight that iVoox and Archive.org are the best platforms to do so . Although Spreaker, Anchor and Poodomatic are also quite “attractive”, considering that you will have to upgrade to their paid plan later if your podcast is successful.
  • Now, for those who do not want to give up a minimum of quality , and are going to host their podcast on a payment platform, what is the best alternative? The first thing you should ask yourself is if you want to choose a platform whose metrics are certified by IAB, or if this aspect is not so important to you. At Mundo Podcast, we recommend that they be certified (although it is not a factor that will affect the quality of your podcast either).
  • Of the platforms that have IAB certified metrics, we recommend Libsyn, Blubrry, or Spreaker.
  • And, of the platforms whose metrics are not IAB certified, we recommend iVoox, Castos, or Buzzsprout.

However, these may not be the best alternatives for some podcasters or companies whose needs are very specific. In any case, you already know which are the best platforms to host your podcast.

And, now that you’ve read our guide to hosting podcast content, why not move on to part three of our complete guide to creating a podcast?
